Justin Schueller
Director of Coaching

Justin has extensive experience across club, national and international programs both at a junior and professional level, making him a respected figure in Australian basketball coaching circles. Since 2017, he has worked in the professional tier of the sport. Over seven seasons with Melbourne United, Schueller was part of two NBL championships (2017–18 and 2020–21), which then saw him take over the Brisbane Bullets as Head Coach from 2023 - 2025. Internationally since 2012, Justin contributed to Australia’s junior national teams serving as both assistant and head coach of the Australian under-17 men’s team at FIBA World Championships and regional competitions. His work with youth programs has been integral to advancing Australia’s future talent pipeline and across all tiers of the sport has recognition for his strategic insight and player development acumen.
Cheryl Chambers
Lead Coach

Cheryl is one of the most respected figures in Australian women’s basketball. Currently an Assistant Coach with the Australian Opals, and a former WNBL player turned elite coach, she brings decades of high-performance experience. Best known for her long tenure as Head Coach of the Southside Flyers, Cheryl led the program to championship success and consistent finals appearances, establishing Southside as a benchmark WNBL club. Renowned for her ability to develop athletes and leaders, Cheryl’s coaching philosophy is built on accountability, resilience, and high-performance habits. At Hoop City, she brings unmatched experience, professionalism, and insight from one of the game’s most trusted leaders.
Reece Bray
Lead Coach

Reece has an impressive playing career both in Aus and College and is now focused on building a career in coaching while he continues to play NBL1 at the Melbourne Tigers. With over 5 years’ experience in both individuals skills training and team coaching Reece is a great addition to the team. Having coached the U14.1s and U16.2s previously at the Melbourne Tigers, Reece is now the head coach of the U12.1s.
Sam Holland
Strength & Conditioning Coach

Sam holds a Master’s degree in Strength and Conditioning and a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science, with over 15 years of experience in basketball as both a player and performance practitioner. He has four years of experience working as a Strength and Conditioning coach with athletes across a range of levels and sports. He has gained Strength and Conditioning experience through work and internships in premier sporting competitions and specialises in long-term athlete development and injury prevention. Sam’s focus is on providing high-quality performance services to help basketballers develop physically, stay healthy, and reach the highest level of competition.
Ryan Maquignaz
Coach

With over six years of experience as a skills coach, Ryan brings a wealth of knowledge from individual athlete development and representative coaching at the VC level. His coaching journey is backed by more than 20 years of playing experience across the VJBL and valuable exposure to high school teams in the USA. Ryan has also delivered skills clinics alongside NBA trainers, gaining insight into modern, high-performance techniques. His philosophy extends beyond on-court performance, focusing on strong fundamentals, discipline, accountability, and habits that help young athletes grow into confident individuals on and off the court.
